What Is Gutter Installation?

Gutter installation means fitting a complete new rainwater system to the eaves of a building: the gutters, the brackets that hold them to the fascia, the outlets, the downpipes that carry water to the ground, and the stop ends, angles and unions that join everything together. Done properly, it takes the rain off the roof and away from your walls and foundations. Done badly, it overflows, sags or drips at the joints within a few winters.

What’s Included in a New Gutter Installation?

  • Survey and Sizing: We look at each roof slope and the existing outlets so the gutter profile and the number of downpipes can cope with the water that roof actually sheds.
  • Removal of the Old System: Old gutters, brackets and downpipes are taken down and taken away.
  • Fascia Check: Gutters are only as secure as the board they’re fixed to, so we check the fascia before fitting and tell you if any of it is rotten.
  • New Gutters, Brackets and Downpipes: Fitted to a steady fall towards each outlet, with brackets spaced to the manufacturer’s guidance.
  • Joints and Connections: Unions, angles, stop ends and outlets fitted and sealed, and downpipes connected into the existing drain or soakaway.
  • Water Test and Clear-Up: We run water through the finished system to check the fall and every joint, then clear the site.

Choosing a Gutter Profile: Half Round, Square, Deep Flow or Ogee

The profile is the shape of the gutter, and it decides how much water it can carry as well as how it looks.

  • Half Round: The standard on most UK homes, usually 112mm wide. Smooth inside and easy to keep clean, but the lowest capacity of the common profiles.
  • Square Line: A flatter-fronted, more modern look, with a little more capacity than half round of a similar width.
  • Deep Flow (High Capacity): Looks like half round but is deeper, and carries roughly twice as much water. The right choice for large or steep roofs, long runs, and valleys that send a lot of water to one spot.
  • Ogee: A decorative, S-shaped front that suits period houses, with good capacity for its size.

Profiles from different systems don’t fit together, so a partial replacement has to match what’s already there — otherwise the whole run is changed.

uPVC vs Aluminium vs Cast Iron Guttering

  • uPVC: The most common choice for UK homes. Lightweight, affordable and never needs painting. It tends to become brittle and start leaking at the seals after around 15–20 years, sooner on elevations that sit in full sun.
  • Aluminium: Stronger and longer-lasting, with a slimmer, crisper finish that suits larger and more contemporary homes. Seamless aluminium is formed on site in continuous lengths, so there are fewer joints to leak.
  • Cast Iron: The traditional material on Victorian, Edwardian and older homes. Heavy and more expensive, but with regular painting it can last for generations, and individual sections can be replaced. On listed buildings, and often in conservation areas, like-for-like cast iron or cast aluminium may be expected instead of uPVC.

Where the period look matters but the budget doesn’t stretch to metal, cast iron-effect uPVC is a sensible middle ground.

Signs You Need New Guttering

  • Gutters that overflow in heavy rain even when they’ve just been cleared
  • Joints that drip, or water running down the face of the wall
  • Sagging sections, or gutters pulling away from the fascia
  • Cracked, brittle or faded uPVC, or rusted and split cast iron
  • Damp patches, green staining or moss on the brickwork below the gutter line
  • Puddles or washed-out soil at the foot of the walls
  • A new extension, dormer or re-roof that has changed how much water the roof sheds

If the problem is one blockage or a single leaking joint, a gutter clean or repair is usually all you need, and we’ll tell you honestly if that’s the case.

How Much Does Gutter Installation Cost?

The price of new guttering depends mainly on the material, the length of the runs, the number of downpipes, and how easy the eaves are to reach. As a rough guide from current UK pricing, fitted uPVC guttering typically costs somewhere around £25–£50 per metre, aluminium noticeably more, and cast iron more again. A full uPVC replacement on a typical three-bedroom semi often lands somewhere between about £600 and £1,500, with larger detached houses higher.

These are national guide figures, not a quote. Things that push the price up include scaffolding for high or awkward elevations, a conservatory or extension roof below the gutter line, extra downpipes, and rotten fascias that need replacing first. We give a free, itemised estimate so you can see exactly what you’re paying for.

Our Gutter Installation Process

  1. Free Survey and Quote: We look at the roof, the existing system and the drains, and give you a clear, itemised price.
  2. Choose Material and Colour: We talk you through uPVC, aluminium or cast iron, the right profile, and the colour that suits the house.
  3. Safe Access: Ladders or a tower for most homes, scaffolding where the height or the ground below needs it.
  4. Strip-Out: The old gutters, brackets and downpipes come down and are removed from site.
  5. Fascia Inspection: We check the board behind and flag anything that needs attention before the new system goes on.
  6. Set the Fall: Brackets are fixed to a string line so the gutter falls gently towards each outlet, with no standing water.
  7. Fit Gutters and Downpipes: Lengths are clipped in, joints sealed, and downpipes fixed and connected into the drains.
  8. Water Test and Handover: We run water through the system to prove the fall and the joints, clear the site, and talk you through what we’ve done.

New Gutters, Fascias and Soffits Together

Gutters are fixed to the fascia board, so if the fascias behind them are rotten or tired, new guttering won’t stay secure for long. Replacing them together can work out cheaper than two separate jobs, because the access only has to be set up once. Ask us about UPVC fascia and soffit replacement alongside your new gutters — or, if your existing system is sound, our gutter cleaning and repairs from £39 may be all you need.

Frequently Asked Questions About Gutter Installation

Below you’ll find answers to common questions about new gutter installation, and how our team can help.

How long does it take to install new guttering?

Most homes are done in a day. A typical semi-detached house with front and back runs and a few downpipes can usually be stripped and re-guttered in a single visit. Larger detached houses, cast iron systems and jobs that need scaffolding take longer, and we’ll give you a realistic timescale with the quote.

How much does new guttering cost?

It depends on the material, the length of the runs, the number of downpipes and the access. As a national guide, fitted uPVC guttering is typically around £25–£50 per metre, with aluminium and cast iron costing more. We give every customer a free, itemised estimate based on their own house rather than a phone guess.

Which is better: uPVC, aluminium or cast iron guttering?

uPVC is the best value for most homes: affordable, light and maintenance-free. Aluminium costs more but is stronger, lasts longer and has a slimmer finish. Cast iron is the right choice for many period and listed properties, and can last for generations with painting. We’ll recommend what suits your house and budget.

Should I replace my fascias at the same time as my gutters?

If the fascias are rotten, soft or tired, yes. Gutters are fixed to the fascia, so new guttering on a failing board won’t stay secure. Doing both together also means the access is only set up once. If your fascias are sound, there’s no need to replace them.

Do I need permission to replace my gutters?

Replacing gutters like-for-like on most houses doesn’t need planning permission. Listed buildings usually need listed building consent for changes, and in a conservation area it’s worth checking with your council before switching from cast iron to uPVC or changing the look. We’ll flag it if your property is likely to be affected.

Can you replace just part of my guttering?

Yes, as long as the new section matches your existing profile and size. Gutter systems from different ranges don’t connect without adaptors, so if your current system is discontinued or failing in several places, replacing the whole run is often the better long-term choice.

Do I need gutter guards?

They can help if your house is surrounded by trees, because they stop leaves building up in the gutter. They don’t make gutters maintenance-free — fine debris and moss still collect — so they still need checking. We can fit them with your new system if they suit your property.

How do I know if my gutters are big enough?

If your gutters overflow at the same spot in heavy rain even when they’re clear, they’re probably undersized or short of a downpipe. It’s common on large roofs and where two slopes meet in a valley. Deep flow gutters carry roughly twice as much water as standard half round, and an extra outlet can make a big difference too.
